Left Shoreline Caravan Park Port Augusta this morning about 9am enroute to Coober Pedy with a free camp thrown in. Lunch time stop was at Woomera rocket range Information Centre which I had been to once before when I stayed at Anna Creek station on the Oodnadatta Track. It has a very interesting museum that includes a Canberra Bomber, a meteor and rocket missiles. After lunch it was back on the road spending the night at a free camp about 27kms from Glendambo Roadhouse (where we topped up our fuel supplies) called Mulga Wells reststop. About 6 other vans and a couple of motorhomes pulled in for the night and it was a pretty quiet night considering it was not to far from the Stuart Highway.
Watching the sunset and the moon rise at Mulga Wells free camp.
Morning came and it was back on the road again, arriving in Coober Pedy about 11am and checking into the Opal Inn Hotel and caravan park. After a walk into downtown Cooper Pedy and a visit to the underground catholic church and the Desert Cave motel we came back to camp where we decided to go out to the Breakaways Reserve which is a 30 minutes drive out of town which we are told is the best place to watch the desert sunset. On the way to the Breakaways is the dog fence which is the longest fence in the world stretching 5300kms from Qld to the Great Australian Bight. The fence was built to protect the sheep from dingoes in Northern Australia. It was a brilliant end to the day on a hill overlooking the breakaways with a glass of wine and the sun setting. It's truly what this trip is all about.
