WINTON

26TH September 2014

Left Mt Isa around 8am. The land as we left was quite undulating and the road had a few bends. Still very dry. First stop the Walkabout Creek pub where Crocodile Dundee was filmed. Not much else there. Some memorabilia from the movie on the walls. Had a lemon squash and hit the road again. It is very dry some of the cattle look like they are hungry with not much to eat in the paddocks. Most of the cattle are Brahman. Saw some emus walking around the paddocks and lots of  kangaroos dead on the road - fodder for the eagles and other birds. It's harsh country. Winton is a pretty little outback town in Queensland about 480kms from Mt Isa which has a museum based on the song Waltzing Matilda. We paid our entrance fees and as we entered the museum we sat and watched an interactive display on the history of the song Waltzing Matilda. Very well done. Spent about 45 minutes here before it shut but we could also come back tomorrow on our tickets which was good. That night we stayed at a free camp called the Long Waterhole which was a great spot just out of town. We were able to get reception and run our tv which was great. A few cows walking around and a few different birds. We enjoyed a gentle breeze after the hot day. Very pleasant night spent here.
In the morning it was back to complete our visit at the Waltzing Matilda Centre. We parked our van undercover in the RV bay at the back of the centre, took a deep breath and went back in to the centre. Spent another two hours here there is simply so much to see. It is amazing. After the marathon effort of completing the museum we went to the cafe there for a coffee and banana bread which was delicious. We walked up the wide main street looking at other items of interest including the very old deck chair cinema and pubs.
 Statue to Banjo Patterson.

The deckchair cinema and the giant  deckchair.

Arnos Wall - made out of all sorts of stuff even the kitchen sink.

The musical fence - had fun here bashing the c**p out of everything making beautiful music haha. You can bash on everything, lots of old junk and nothing and no one around to disturb. Keith was wearing earplugs so that was ok. Really getting out a bit of angst before sitting for ages in the car again. On to Longreach and the Stockmans Hall of Fame a longheld dream of mine to visit here.
