LONGREACH 27/9/14 AND 28/9/14
Arrived in Longreach and set up camp in Apex Park near Thompson River. Quite a few vans but definitely not as many as we'd heard there were at the height of the tourist season. Because it's a free camp the vans are at least 3 deep and packed in like sardines according to a report I'd heard from a fellow traveller. Flat and dusty it is a big square area with a couple of toilet blocks at one end but relatively quiet. As it was Grand Final Day between Hawthorn and Sydney Swans I dropped Keith at the pub to watch the last quarter and had a look around Longreach - very quick as it was dead and no-one around.Sunday morning and it was off to the Stockmans Hall of Fame and Outback Heritage Centre a few k's out of town. Just as we arrived a big tour group came in it so it was fairly crowded inside for a while. The Hall of Fame is a very interesting place it tells the story of outback Australia throughout a number of galleries. The building is a very interesting design with the displays on different levels throughout the building. There are also walls of different Australian pioneers that tells of their contribution to Australia's rich and diverse history. The museum took me at least two hours to go through and as I had always wanted to go there it was a very significant part of my trip.
After we left there I dropped Keith off at the Qantas Founders Museum as I needed to go into town for groceries. When I picked him up he had enjoyed it though he felt having to pay to get in, then to look at the Qantas Jumbo and then again to go out on the wing was asking a bit much.
